Children's House Community

Serving ages three to six+ years

Children ages 3 to 6+ years comprise the Children’s House community. Younger students learn from older classmates, while older students are academically challenged and gain leadership skills.

Students in the Children’s House learn actively in indoor and outdoor spaces designed to provide freedom of movement and the ability to choose their activities. Guides observe each child’s readiness and mastery of lessons to guide them onward. The children learn at their own pace through self-correcting materials, observation, discovery and interaction. Group experiences are part of the curriculum, building community while encouraging social skills.

Students in the Children’s House Community develop a love of their school community and of learning through materials that are self-directed. There are four main curriculum areas:

  • Practical Life activities help children develop their control and coordination of movement, adaptation to their environment, independence, orderly work habits, concentration, responsibility, and the development of the will.
  • Sensorial Materials help children refine their sensory perceptions i.e. visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory and tactile senses, through specially designed materials and games. These exercises help children with their ability to arrive at abstractions and to create greater mental order through their senses.
  • Spoken Language, Reading and Writing exercises follow a clear sequence to help the child express themselves verbally and in written form, as well as to be able to understand and appreciate all of the written word around us.
  • Mathematics Materials help children understand foundational mathematical concepts such as quantities and their symbols, and they build upon concepts learned from the Sensorial Materials. They also begin exploring mathematical operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and the concept of fractions.
  • The Children’s House environment is also rich with activities that reflect concepts in history, art, geography, science and music.

Attendance is daily with hours based on age:

  • The Morning Work Cycle (Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.) is offered to children under the age of 5.
  • The School Day Work Cycle (Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.) is required for children ages 5 and 6, and is optional for children ages 3 and 4 years old.
  • Depending on readiness and the Guide’s observations, children 3 and 4 years of age have the option to stay for the School Day Work Cycle. Children will either nap or remain in the classroom environment.

Morning and after care options are available at 7:30 a.m. and until 4:40 p.m. Learn More »

The Journey Continues

As your child develops and fully benefits from a full school day, he or she is ready to continue the journey in the Elementary Community. The Montessori Elementary environment responds to the child’s expanding view of the universe and enthusiasm for larger concepts, which support abstract thinking.
